Instructions
Here’s a complete guide on how to install your new Juno G LCD module.
Preparation.
- Tools & workspace
You need the following:
- A #1 size Phillips / Cross point screwdriver.
- Two books at least 25mm thick.
- A pot or a cup to put the screws into.
Prepare a clean surface to work on. Avoid carpeted floors as these can generate static electricity that could damage your Juno G. A kitchen worksurface or kitchen table is ideal.
- Screws
There are 5 different screws used in the Juno G. We call these screw A, B C,D & E.
These instructions indicate which screw to remove by pointing with an arrow and telling you which screw type is used. Like this:
Some screws are marked with a red X like this. You should not remove these screws.
When reassembling your Juno-G refer to the disassembly pictures to determine which screw to use in each position.
Disassembly.
- Remove the VOLUME KNOB and VALUE DIAL by gently pulling.
Later on you will be removing the circuit boards behind these dials. To get the boards out from the back, you must first remove the knobs on the front. They are just a push fit. Please note that the volume knob only goes back in one position, take a look at the shaft and it will be very obvious how to reassemble it.
- Turn the keyboard over.
Rest the keyboard on the two books so that it is supported at each end.
- Open the case.
Remove 5 screws type A.
Remove 5 screws type B.
Remove 12 screws type C.
Do not remove the screws marked with a red X.
- Remove the JACK BOARD.
Unplug all the connectors from the JACK BOARD.
Flat white ribbon cables are removed by gently pulling on the ribbon.
All other connectors are removed by gently pulling on the plug, pulling on the wires may damage the cable.
Remove the screws on the JACK BOARD PCB.
Remove the screws on the Juno-G case. Do not remove the screws marked with a red X.
Lift the JACK BOARD out and place to one side.
- Remove the MAIN BOARD.
Unplug all the connectors from the MAIN BOARD.
Flat white ribbon cables are removed by gently pulling on the ribbon.
All other connectors are removed by gently pulling on the plug, pulling on the wires may damage the cable.
Remove the 5 screws on the MAIN BOARD PCB.
(Look carefully, in this image you can see our display module plugged into the main board!)
Remove the 2 MAIN BOARD screws on the Juno-G case.
Lift out the main board and place to one side.
- Remove screws & parts on PANEL A BOARD
Remove 6 screws on PANEL A BOARD.
Remove two metal brackets from PANEL A BOARD. The bracket on the left may be tight, wiggle it gently to remove it.
- Remove screws and parts on PANEL B BOARD
Remove 5 screws from PANEL B BOARD. Do note remove screws marked with a red X.
Remove two metal brackets from PANEL B BOARD. The bracket on the left may be tight, wiggle it gently to remove it.
Unplug both cables from the small board marked “Roland Juno-G LCD BOARD ASSY”. Discard the old 18 way flat ribbon cable.
Remove Plastic covers from PANEL A BOARD and PANEL B BOARD and place to one side.
- Turn PANEL A BOARD and PANEL B BOARD over
Moving both boards together, turn the boards over so that they look like this:
- Remove Roland LCD module from Panel B board.
Remove the four screws holding the Roland LCD in place (note, picture below shows our replacement display!) Discard the old Roland display.
Locate the four white clips.
Remove the all four clips by squeezing together as shown and pushing them through the board. I’ve used a small pair of pliers, you can use anything you like, tweezers or even fingers.
The small PCB marked “Roland Juno-G LCD BOARD ASSY” should now be free. Discard it and the four white clips.
- Install ribbon cable on new LCD module.
Your new LCD module uses Zero Insertion Force (ZIF) connectors. The ribbon slides easily in and out when the connector is unlocked but cannot be removed when the connector is locked.
Unlock the 18 pin connector “J2” on your new display module by very gently lifting the lock at both end of the connector together.
Insert the new cable supplied with your display module.
Check that the ribbon cable is fully inserted and straight.
Lock the ZIF connector by pressing on both sides of the lock at the same time.
- Attach new LCD module to PANEL B BOARD
Thread the display cable through the hole in PANEL B BOARD as shown.
Place the new display module on PANEL B BOARD and use the four type “D” screws to screw the display to the plastic mounts (as shown in step 11.)
- Remove screen protector and clean Juno G display window.
Pull the tab to remove the screen protector from your new Juno-G display.
Ensure that there are no fingerprints on the display.
You may want to clean the display window on the Juno-G case at this point too.
- Re-assemble
Reverse the procedure in steps 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4 & 3.
In each step, replace each screw and tighten 2 turns only. This ensures that each part is correctly aligned before the screws are fully tightened.
When all screws in the step are tightened 2 turns, check that the board is flat (steps 10,9,8,7 & 6) or that the case is properly closed (step 3) and that no cables are trapped. Then fully tighten the screws and move to the next step
- Power on your Juno-G and check that everything works.
